Captivating Caulfield

Historic, well connected and popular with families, professionals and students, the quartet of Caulfield suburbs (North, Caulfield, East and South) offers a superb urban lifestyle for all ages and stages in life.

Originally the home of the Yalukit people, Colonists first settled in the area in the 1840’s using the rich pasture land as feed lots before building the first small hamlets of Camden Town, Owensville and Alma Road Village emerged. It’s then-rural location and convenience to Melbourne attracted a number of wealthy landowners, who built fine mansions in the area – a handful of which remain to this day. In 1876, the much-loved Caulfield Racecourse was established as the home of the Melbourne Racing Club and provides one of the numerous tracts of green space that give Caulfield an elegant, leafy ambience. In the north, Caulfield Park is home to a range of sporting clubs, many of which make full use of the modern Caulfield Park Pavilion and the array of ovals and playing fields. These valuable public spaces are echoed in South Caulfield’s Princes Park, which not only includes playgrounds and lawned gardens, but also a generous and popular dog park. The brand new Booran Reserve is the latest addition to Caulfield’s open space and with its adventure playground, splash play and basketball hoops, it’s been designed specifically with kids in mind.

In addition to the parks, leafy streets and racing heritage, Caulfield is noted for its internationally-recognised campus of Monash University as well as its close proximity to high-quality schools including Caulfield Grammar, Wesley College, Glen Eira College, Shelford Girls Grammar, Leibler Yavneh College and the Japanese School of Melbourne.

The diverse, multicultural appeal of the university and schools are also reflected in the array of restaurants and shops that fill the popular and bustling retail precincts dotted throughout this family of suburbs. The pulsing heart of Caulfield is the intersection of Glen Huntly and Hawthorn Roads, where cafes, boutiques, homeware shops and specialty stores provide for its discerning residents and visitors alike.

On the occasions when a particular delicacy or home item can’t be found in the Caulfields, prestigious Malvern Village to the north and Elsternwick Village to the west are literally just up the road, while the restaurants, coffee shops and bars of St Kilda East are well worth the short tram ride or leisurely stroll up Balaclava Road and Carlisle Street. And when it’s time to really celebrate, Australia’s most highly regarded fine-dining establishment, and regular member of the world’s top 50 list, Attica Restaurant is just across Hotham Street in nearby Ripponlea.

If a trip into the city is called for, few suburbs come close to the Caulfields for connectivity. Trams dissect the suburbs from all four directions, linking residents to the city, the Malvern and Glen Huntly railway stations and the Princes Highway. Whether you’re after a luxury family home, stylish modern townhouse, family villa or chic apartment, it would be hard to find a friendlier or better-connected address than Caulfield.
