With a love of wine and the desire to produce their own, Melbourne mates Oscar and Nick began a quest in the1990s to find the ideal property on which to produce quality wines, and turned their hobby into a profitable part-time venture.
The search took 3 years and eventuated in the purchase of 125 Knafel Road, Taggerty which had all the right features, elevation, north-facing, beautifully draining loam soils, and the bonus of being set in a beautiful area with the backdrop of the Cathedral Range and expansive northerly views.
Vines were planted throughout 1995-97 and the now mature vines produce premium, award-winning wines.
Comprising 22 acres, 10 acres are under vines, offering the potential for further expansion.
The controlled-yielding vineyard produces 12,000 to 14,000 bottles annually, varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cab Franc, and Sangiovese.
Oscar and Nick also make their own wines and so the property is complete with a small-scale winery that includes a temperature-controlled winery/barrel room, cool store, storage shed, workshop, and undercover machinery area, and so they can stay when necessary, there is an amenities room that provides weekend accommodation.
The friends have now successfully run Mt Cathedral Vineyard & Winery for over 25 years, winning awards and enjoying the camaraderie of their passion and part-time pursuit that gives them an interest outside their Melbourne jobs as well as a profitable sideline.
