Balancing It All: The Mothers of RT Edgar

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the women across the RT Edgar network who balance the demands of real estate with the equally important role of motherhood.
Across different stages of life and career, their experiences vary, but a common thread runs through each story: resilience, perspective, and a deep commitment to both family and profession.
On ambition, balance and building a future
For Sarah Case, Director, Stonnington, motherhood is the anchor behind everything she does.
“No matter how big the day has been or how hard I’ve worked, I get to come home to my son. That moment resets everything.”
For many, motherhood reshapes priorities and the definition of success itself.
“Balance doesn’t mean doing everything at once - it means giving myself permission to shift my focus to what matters most in that moment,” says Justine Kantanis, General Manager.
That sentiment is echoed by Annabelle Feng, Director, Boroondara, who reflects:
“Today, success is no longer about doing everything perfectly. It is about being fully present for the moments that truly matter, while still building a career I feel proud of.”

On the realities of real estate
Across every stage of motherhood, the nature of the industry remains constant.
“The role doesn’t switch off at 5pm, there are always calls, weekend inspections, and client needs,” says Holly Hakins, Sales Associate, Point Lonsdale.
For Cait Merriman, Sales Consultant and Marketing, Ocean Grove, that unpredictability is amplified by young children.
“Real estate doesn’t run to a timetable… and at the same time, small children have absolutely no interest in your schedule.”
For others, particularly in property management, the pressure can feel especially intense.
“The impact can be extremely overwhelming… boundaries can sometimes not be possible as client expectations and working hours change on a regular basis,” says Nicole Woods, Team Leader, Property Management, Boroondara.
Despite the challenges, many have found that structure, communication and support make a meaningful difference.
“Simple boundaries have made a big difference - being upfront about availability, protecting certain times where possible, and planning family time just as intentionally as I would a listing or inspection,” says Nicole Janett, Sales Consultant, Woodend.

On perspective, connectionand community
With older children, Chelsie Cargill, Licenced Estate Agent, Bayside, offers a longer-term perspective.
“The juggle is real. It’s a wild ride selling houses.”
Yet with experience comes greater intention.
“The busier I get, the more I try and carve out moments to spend and celebrate with my children.”
For Holly Hakins, balancing career and family has become a shared journey while working alongside her husband within their business.
“I’ve learnt that it’s less about perfect balance and more about integration.”
That sense of connection also extends beyond the home.
As Marilyn Reed, Senior Sales Consultant, Boroondara, reflects:
“Being involved in school and community initiatives… meant that people get to know you and develop a sense of trust that develops naturally.”
For Annabelle Feng, motherhood has also deepened her connection to the emotional side of real estate.
“Behind every home is a family story, a chapter of life and years of memories. Becoming a mother has helped me understand that on a far deeper level.”

On advice for others
Across every perspective, one message remains consistent: support matters.
“Don’t try to do it all on your own,” says Sarah Case.
“Build a strong support system, both at work and at home,” adds Holly Hakins.
There is also a shared understanding that success takes time and consistency.
“Be patient… it takes time to establish a track record and reputation,” says Marilyn Reed.
And perhaps most importantly:
“Be kind to yourself… there will be periods where work is busier and others where family takes priority, and that’s okay.”

A shared story
Across the RT Edgar network, these women represent different stages of motherhood and career, yet their experiences reflect a shared understanding.
That balance is not about perfection, but presence.
That success evolves over time.
And that it is possible to build a meaningful career, while staying connected to what matters most.
